World Headquarters' Inventory Time is Coming!

It’s that time of year again! World Headquarters is conducting physical inventory from December 17, 2009, to January 4, 2010.

What does this mean for you?
As part of TI’s inventory process, we will be unable to process the following transactions between December 17, 2009, and January 4, 2010 (including all submissions by mail and/or online):

  • Supply orders
  • New member kits
  • Charter kits

As a result, submissions received by Wednesday, December 16, 2009, 11:59 p.m., PST, will be processed and shipped. Orders received after that date will be held and processed after January 4, 2010.

In addition to the Toastmasters’ online store, the club and district business sections of the Web site will be inactive from December 17, 2009, to January 4, 2010.

Visits to Overseas Toastmasters Clubs

Dear Members,

As a Toastmaster in Singapore, we should try to make a point to visit at least one Toastmasters Club when we are travelling overseas for holidays, business, etc...

Such networking opportunities don't come so easily when you are actually holidaying with your families & friends.

During my recent holiday to London, I visited 3 Toastmasters Clubs in London in different parts of London. Photos are shown as at the bottom of the posting

After I had made an impeccable presentation at one club, one of the Toastmasters actually bought me coffee on another day to coach him on improving his skills.

My Visit to Meridian Speakers @ Spanish Galleon Pub, Greenwich (24 November 2009)
- Project Speaker & General Evaluator

My Visit to London Corinthians @ Thistle Westminister Hotel, Victoria (26 November 2009)
- Table Topics Evaluator

My Visit to Northern Lights Speakers @ London Irish Centre, Camden Town (30 November 2009)
- Competent Leader Manual Evaluator

(Fyi, London resides in District 71, together with Ireland)

Next time you visit a Toastmasters Club overseas, let us know and we'll post it on our blog.

District 80 Humourous Speech & Evaluation Speech Contests Results

District 80 Humourous & Evaluation Contests 2009 Results

Humourous Speech
Winner: Ng Cher Khim (Division D)
1st Runner-Up: Eric Feng (Division S)
2nd Runner-Up: Wong Kok Wah (Division B)
Prior to the announcements, there were 2 time disqualifications. Of which, one of them is a potential winner.

Evaluation Speech
Winner: Darren Tay Wen Jie (Division S)
1st Runner-Up: Wekie Tay (Division Z)
2nd Runner-Up: Pradeep Kumar (Division A)
Prior to the announcements, there were no time disqualifications

Something interesting about this contest that disbunks the myth of the first evaluator: As the first evaluator, you are going to be knocked out easily as you are the benchmark.

To counter this myth: you have to make the best use of giving the first impression of your evaluation to the judges and your outline must be prepared before the contest.

In accordance to Rulebook 2009, contestants are allowed to bring in any preparation materials of their own.

Winning isn't everything, but the will to win is everything.Vince Lombardi, American football coach

Chapter Meeting on 12 Oct 09

Dear Members and Friends,
We had our first meeting on 12 Oct 09, Monday, at Cairnhill CC. Even though we had a smaller turnout, the meeting nonetheless turnout to be an eventful and refreshing event.
Our bubbly Toastmaster of the Evening, Daniel Chua from IEA TMC, greeted us with his ever-cheerful smiles that set the tone of the evening. We started off with the prepared speech segment by Pei Shan, Gerald and Kandi respectively. Pei Shan did her 1st AP project on Interpretive reading, with emotional interpretation of Roald Dahl's book, Matilda. Roald Dahl is one of the foremost children author.(Works like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (translate into film starring Johnny Depp) Gerald started his 1st AP project from the Entertaining Speaker manual, highlighting how he become a driver after numerous failures. Kandi did her 3rd AP of the Entertaining speaker manual, reviewing how phrase like "kicking the bucket" truly means. Congratulation to all 3 speakers on their completion of these respective projects.
After the break, our evaluators took turn to review and highlight the points of the respective projects. Bruno, with his witty analysis, touch on some aspects in using the voice in interpretive reading. Daisy Neo, president of the Raffles Town TMC, encourage Gerald to "let go" by dramatizing the speech further with expressive body gestures and vocal variety. Casey See, VP-PR of IES TMC, reviewed enthusiastically on Kandi's used of the English language and puns.
Then came the Table-Topic session where our late appointed Table-Topic Master, Gerald Ong, used a creatively "lazy" method by asking the audience to write one topic and asked the appointed speaker to have their take on the topic written. I believe it had been a testing challenge for the speaker as well as the topic creator.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our guests, Toastmaster of the Evening, Daniel Chua, for his ENTERTAINING conduct and keeping the positive flow of the meeting, and to Daisy Neo for answering the call to help us at the last minute, yet giving an ENCOURAGING evaluation, and Casey See, for his ENTHUSIASTIC review and energy. I am so greatly encouraged by our dedicated Bruno, who came to support despite a hefty and pressing schedule, and our effervescent Tay Yiang Ping, who volunteer for the timer role while taking time-off to be with us despite her daughter's exam.
Our next meeting is on the 2nd Monday of November, 9th November, at Cairnhill CC. Do let me or our VPE, Theresa Sng, know if you would like to do your project on that day. I welcome all to join us and looking forward to a joyous meeting ahead.
